ARM Graduate Opportunities

One of our recent graduates, Nikolay Borisov, has just alerted us to jobs at ARM: http://www.arm.com/about/careers/graduates/vacancies.php

He comments:

“I don’t think there is much to say about ARM – the name speaks of itself J The company is doing very good, this September they hired 105 people and they still need more great talent. It turns out there are 3-4 Aber graduates so people from Uni have great chances. The main requirements is C/PYTHON as well as some general awareness in operating systems/CPU architectures
Hint: read up on CPU pipelines/out of order execution/race conditions in order to prepare for the interview 😀

In case anyone have questions they can email at Nikolay.Borisov@arm.com and I’ll be happy to help”

GCHQ Online game for Students

GCHQ devises latest Cyber Security Challenge game and asks ‘how well could you protect your company’s intellectual property in the face of a cyber-attack?’

GCHQ, the UK Government Communications Headquarters has developed the latest Cyber Security Challenge competition, testing the UK public’s potential for a career in cyber security. ‘Network Security in the Protection of Intellectual Property’ presents any UK citizen not currently working in the profession with the opportunity to take on the role of a security manager at a small electronics company which has recently won a bid to supply components to the Ministry of Defence. The short online assessment will task them, as the security manager, with ensuring that the company’s IP and valuable data are not stolen by cyber criminals and sold on the online black market.

SyQic Summer Internships

Summer internship offers for second, third and MSc students.
Darius
Hi. My name’s Darius and I’m a software developer at SyQic Limited. We’re an international IPTV company based in Kuala Lumpur who specialise in supplying Asian video-on-demand to diaspora communities. I was offered an internship opportunity with the company after graduating from the MEng at Aber Comp Sci. As part of the placement I lived and worked in Malaysia for a month, an experience I enjoyed immensely. The company offered me a permanent position at their UK office at the end of the placement which I eagerly accepted.
I work with the development team at SyQic’s office in Gerrards Cross, just on the outskirts of London. I’ve also travelled to Kuala Lumpur again since starting to work directly with my colleagues in the Far East.
We’re currently in the final stages of a project to create a new product called Yoonic. It’s revamping our content management and distribution systems as well as creating a brand new front-end app range. All of this presents several interesting challenges which I’ve enjoyed tackling over the past few months. Now we’re on the threshold of an exciting new stage in the project as we deploy with out partners and look in the future to design and add features that will increase the value of the platform to our subscribers.
SyQic’s offering several internship placements this summer that would be great experience for recent graduates. Whether you’re interested in smartphone app development, web development or video delivery there’s something for you here. For an opportunity to work on an interesting and exciting project and get some valuable work experience, apply now. There are permanent positions in the company up for grabs as well at the end of the placement!

ARM – Graduate and Internship Opportunities

ARM Holdings is the world’s leading semiconductor intellectual property (IP) supplier. What you probably know is that the company makes lots of microprocessors which go into devices such as mobile phones and low power computers. But wait, there is more.

At a recent Open Day, one of the parents of a prospective student talked to me about ARM computer. In addition to the hardware, a large part of the business writes software, some of which is low-level, but there are plenty of higher-level software developer opportunities in the company. The person noted that the company would love to hear from top-quality students for internship and graduate opportunities.

Anyway, there is a chance that the 2013 opportunities have been snapped up, but I encourage you to have a look on their recruitment site. I haven’t looked at all of the links, but it looks like some of the application dates have passed. If there is a position that really interests you, you could always consider emailing to ask if a late application would be welcomed. Otherwise, you could keep an eye on other vacancies that may come up.

The two links are provided below. You may yet find a great opportunity waiting for you in Cambridge or beyond.

http://www.arm.com/about/careers/graduates/index.php

As a side note: What was also encouraging was that the person thought the types of skills we aim to encourage through our course fit well with the extra skills that companies want from prospective employees. These are skills such as the team working and the communication skills in addition to the technical background.

The Graduate 2013

I’ve been asked to let you all now about this event below……

The Graduate 2013

After graduating from University, many IT / Computing students have the knowledge to fulfil the technical specification of a job advertisement but can be perceived to lack some of the soft skills to be a modern IT professional. Without interview or assessment day experience it can be difficult to for them to show their true potential to prospective employers.

To help tackle this The BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, has organised “The Graduate” Event. The BCS has teamed up with an outstanding list of IT Graduate Employers to put this event together.

Some the judges on the day include Yorkshire Water, Deloitte, Microsoft and Capgemini.

“The Graduate” is a mock recruitment event designed to provide IT/Computing students with the chance to experience how a recruitment process works. It provides an insight into what competencies organisations are seeking in their next graduate intake, an opportunity for them to exhibit their potential and the platform to learn new skills for when it really counts.

It is important to point out that “The Graduate” is not a recruitment event. The main aim of the event is to give the candidates feedback from trained professional graduate recruiters so that they can be better prepared for when they are applying for a real job. In the past a number of candidates have started roles at one of our partners, but this is very much an indirect benefit.

I would be really grateful if you could publicise this opportunity to your students. The event is open to all student year groups including recent graduates. The best way for them to get an idea of what happens at the event is to take a look at this video from 2012’s event http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=BQ-5jIj8ot8.

The advertised deadline for this event is the 31st January 2013 so the students really need to apply ASAP. The event itself will take place on Monday 18th March.

More information can be found at http://www.thegraduate.bcs.org/ and you can find us on Facebook at www.facebook.com/TheGraduateEvent and on Twitter as @TheGraduateBCS.
