YEAR IN INDUSTRY 2019/2020 OPPORTUNITIES AT DIAMOND

Diamond’s 12 month ‘Year in Industry’ placement scheme allows undergraduate students studying for a relevant degree such as Engineering, Software/Computing, Physics, Chemistry or Biology, to gain experience working at a world-class research centre. If you or any of your collaborators are involved with the teaching or development of undergraduate students, I would be grateful if you could cascade the information.

The students will work on their own project during the year, with support from their supervisors and collaborating with staff across the organisation. We have an excellent track record for helping students execute work which is valued by the whole Diamond community. You can read about the programme, and each of the available projects on our website:

Year in Industry Placement Scheme Webpage

Students will also have the opportunity to get involved with other areas of work to gain a wider view of the full range of what a synchrotron does. Training and experience is also provided in the following areas:

  • Presentation training to prepare for the final talk on the project
  • Poster design as an important skill for the communication of science
  • Python programming
  • Science communication to the public, including training and involvement at events
  • An internal programme of seminars and talks from leading scientists
  • Tours and talks of other science facilities across the Harwell Campus, such as ISIS and the Central Laser facility

For example, in 2018, some of the Year in Industry students went to the Bluedot Science and Music festival to represent Diamond, and students have also gone to New Scientist Live and other external events.

Placement students must be registered as an undergraduate for the duration of their time at Diamond and ensure that they can commit to the whole 12-month period. Placements typically start during the summer between academic years 2 and 3. Applicants should be expecting to gain a first or 2:1 honours degree. For the positions advertised, students will need to either:

  • Be a UK/EEA national
    or
  • Hold a tier 4 Visa and have a year in industry (sandwich year) as a part of their degree.

The deadline for applications is midnight on Thursday 1st November 2018 . Shortlisted candidates will be invited to a student recruitment day on Tuesday 20th November and Friday 23rd November 2018.
