Demand for our services from clients is at a high. In response, we have re-opened applications for this year’s Summer Vacation Scheme for a short period of time. Your placement will begin in July 2015 and last for 8 weeks so you’ll need to get your applications in pronto.

Web developer for National Library

The National Library of Wales Web Design and Development Section is looking for an enthusiastic candidate to develop and support a web mapping interface for the Cynefin project (crowdsourcing geographical info from old maps), and will be responsible for creating data-driven websites from initial concepts to final release.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate attention to detail, the ability to interpret and work to a strict brief (but who isn’t afraid of expressing new ideas), experience of interface development and design, along with solid experience of HTML, CSS, PHP frameworks and WordPress.

Careers in the Civil Service UK and the EU

Are you interested in a career in the Civil Service? Come along to this talk and find out more about working for the Home Office and careers in the European Union.

Joanne Hopkins is an Aber graduate, graduating in English and International Politics. She started her civil service career in 2000, worked her way up to senior civil service level and is now Head of the Home Office (UK Government) in Wales. She will be sharing her journey, discussing the various job roles and offering advice on getting into the civil service.

Vicky Joseph is EPSO EU Careers Ambassador. The application process for graduate careers within the EU opens in March. She will be giving a talk about the application process and the graduate roles available.

Funded work experience in China (via British Council)

The British Council provide support for two month internships in mainland China. Placements are available in a wide range of industries, across six booming cities, and are available all year round. The funding covers accommodation and comprehensive travel insurance, airport pick-up, and dedicated support throughout the placement. Students in receipt of a full Maintenance Grant are also eligible for sponsored return flights. Tiger Computing are looking for a graduate or graduating student who loves Linux. They’d be willing to come and visit us on Thurs 19th March and talk about their company if there would be enough interest from students to hear this talk. Funded Phd and MSc options in Edinburgh and Saudi

Matt Pugh (who was in Aber but is now in Edinburgh) has let us know that Edinburgh have Masters funding available. Deadlines of 1st May. http://www.ed.ac.uk/news/2015/masters-funding-060315

Rob Hoehndorf (who was in Aber but is now in Saudi Arabia) has funding for MSc, PhD and internship placements in KAUST. He can fund 3 or more PhD or MSc students at the moment (i.e. free housing, healthcare, flight and 25-30k USD stipend per year). The internships are also fully funded, last from 1-6 months (ideally 3-6 months) and come with free flight, accommodation, and a stipend of 1200 USD/month. This would be good for students who are not sure if they really want to stay in Saudi for years, or for students looking for summer opportunities.
