We are seeking two candidates to develop solutions in two exciting research projects: (1) visualisation of Earth Observation data from satellites (climatedata.space) and (2) interfacing and networking optical in situ sensors (www.monocle-h2020.eu). Both positions require a keen interest in software development with good problem solving skills and the ability to think laterally. Applicants will be matched with the most suitable project for their interest and experience, but you are welcome to express a preference for either the visualisation or the sensors project. No formal qualifications are necessary but you must be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of computing / programming principles, for example, by presenting marks for degree modules completed.

The roles will include some or all of the following activities:

  • Advanced 2D and 3D web-based open source visualisation systems for intuitive use and analysis of remotely sensed imagery using JavaScript, HTML5/WebGL and Python (visualisation)
  • Sensor communication and interoperability (measurement control, data interfaces) (sensors)
  • Data processing and distribution systems (primarily scripting in Python, Perl or shell)
  • User-friendly GUIs for the software (using web technologies, Python, JavaScript, NodeJS)
  • Web sites and database software development (using PHP, Javascript, XML, PostgreSQL)

Candidates should be undertaking an undergraduate degree that has a considerable computing component, and should demonstrate strong skills and interests in programming, ideally but not essentially in JavaScript, NodeJS, and Python in a Linux environment.

Appropriate on-the-job training in specialist areas will be provided. Opportunities to develop personal interests in computing will be encouraged within the overall context of the research and development activities of our group.

If selected you will be part of our remote sensing research team which consists of over 30 researchers, software developers, and students. You will have a dedicated Linux workstation; additional facilities include other Linux workstations, ~140-node Linux Sun Grid Engine cluster and ~3.5 petabytes disk space. Both PML and the nearby University of Plymouth offer an active student life with many social and sports opportunities. Plymouth itself has many cultural and social amenities, while its proximity to Dartmoor and Cornwall offers great scope for outdoor pursuits.
