>Please find attached a job advert for the Year in Industry at UTC Aerospace Systems – >some of the students saw this / met us at Gregynog this weekend.

Game & Wildlife Conservation Trust

Here is a copy of an opportunity I have just been sent by email.

It is now time for the GWCT to begin advertising our placement opportunities for 2018/19. At this time, we have 1 x undergraduate Computer Science and Wildlife Research sandwich placement opportunity. This placement along with our ecological research opportunities have now been added to our website: https://www.gwct.org.uk/about/student-opportunities/undergraduates/

Application and Deadline

I strongly suggest that interested students, get the following to the placement contacts as soon as possible:

1. CV detailing A levels and GCSEs – results and subjects; as well as any graded university results up until the application is sent. Please ask students to include information on any paid or volunteer activities.

2. Covering letter – Students should describe what they want out of the placement, their interest and what skills they bring to it.

3. A references letter from a lecturer or tutor.

We will need these documents by 3rd January 2018 to ensure that students are considered for the first round of interviews. For most of the placements interviewing will start in mid-January and will continue until we have filled the positions. We may accept late applications if we have not filled the position already so it is always worthwhile for interested students to enquire, up until the adverts are taken off our website.

Finally, thank you again for allowing us the opportunity of providing sandwich placements to your students. Over the course of many years we have found sandwich students to be an extremely valuable addition to our organisation and we have enjoyed working with them and you. We as an organisation, feel the students get invaluable experience in wildlife conservation research from these opportunities, which seems to be a valuable asset when they enter the job market or postgraduate education, be it related or not.

If I am sending this to the incorrect person then please also let me know, if possible with the correct contact.

Kind Regards,

Ryan Burrell

DCA Design – Software Developer Placement

Please note the closing date is 15 December 2017

To apply, please send a CV and covering letter to software@dca-design.com clearly indicating that you are applying for a software student placement, with an indication of your preferred placement dates.

Software student placement

See www.dca-careers.com for more information.

Company background

Founded in 1960, DCA is one of the world’s leading product design and development consultancies, operating in many diverse markets and with services ranging from design research and strategy to industrial design, mechanical engineering, electronic hardware and software engineering. While you may not have heard of us before, you’ve probably used a product that was designed here.

 Role

We’re looking for the best embedded software students to come to our offices in Warwick (UK) for industrial placements lasting between six and twelve months. This is an ideal role for an undergraduate student specialising in embedded systems software engineering, who will benefit from gaining valuable experience in all aspects of the software development life cycle. The candidate will be required to participate and contribute towards software feasibility studies, design, coding, debugging and testing. DCA are involved in a wide range of software projects including medical devices, fluidpumps, web based applications and PC based test tools, however our primary projects involve embedded software running on various microcontrollers. A student will benefit from improving not only their software engineering skills but their hardware and electronics knowledge as well. In addition to contributing towards customer-based projects, the student may also be required to research new software tools and technologies to aid in future development and help improve software developmentprocedures (including software, scripts and documentation).

We’ll help you to get up to speed with our design tools and our approach to project work while giving you appropriate responsibility for work that needs doing. You’ll need to be enthusiastic, motivated, self-reliant and able to manage your time, but help and support will of course be available when required – we assign a mentor to students when they arrive to help you settle in.

A placement here will complement your studies and give you the advantage that comes with hands-on experience when looking for a job after university. Because our projects are so varied and we only employ the best engineers, you’ll get a great range of exposure to different aspects of software design and you’ll learn a lot along the way. There’s a vibrant atmosphere at DCA in which you’ll quickly be made to feel part of the team and our placement students manage to have some fun as well as meeting the challenges of the job.

Pay and benefits

We offer competitive rates of pay. You will be entitled to 22 days holiday per annum plus bank holidays, adjusted on a pro rata basis for placements of less than 12 months.

Essential qualities

– The ability to program in C/embedded C to a reasonable level.

– A working knowledge of Java, C# or Python.

– A basic knowledge of embedded systems and relevant hardware.

– A proactive, enthusiastic and self-motivated attitude, with the ability to work individually and as part of a team.

– Effective verbal and written communication skills in the English language.

– The ability to problem-solve (e.g. debug other people’s software).

Desirable qualities

– A basic knowledge of UML design.

– An awareness of coding standards (e.g. MISRA).

– An understanding of approaches to software testing: unit, integration and system tests.

– Experience of using electrical circuits and embedded microcontrollers, e.g. Arduino

– Experience in designing basic hardware, e.g. to interface to an Arduino or Pi

How to apply

To apply, please send a CV and covering letter to software@dca-design.com clearly indicating that you are applying for a software student placement, with an indication of your preferred placement dates. Thoughtworks 2018 Graduate Scheme

We had the following from Aber graduate Tito Sarrionandia who now works at Thoughtworks, email Tito (tito.sarrionandia@thoughtworks.com) for further information:

We’ve just opened up our graduate hiring process for 2018. Increasingly our clients are realising that if they want to survive they need to become companies that stop seeing tech as a separate silo of their business, or an outsourced expense, and start making their ability to build and run software a primary business concern. We need the highest calibre technologists to help them get there, and we’re hoping some Aber graduates can be part of that.

ThoughtWorks is a global collective of technologists, we help our clients achieve their most ambitious missions by building great software and driving organisational change. We believe that people with technical skills should be empowered to be decision makers across our own organisation and our clients organisations to stay ahead. We are advocates for social and economic justice, working with community and activist groups to empower underrepresented voices. The Anita Borg Institute recently named us their top company for women in technology, and we are a Stonewall Diversity Champion.

A love of creating technology is a must, as is a willingness to travel, sometimes internationally. All graduates start out their career with a 6 week global residential training programme in India. More information is available here<https://info.thoughtworks.com/graduates>, but the best way forward is to email me directly – either with a CV and covering letter, or to arrange an informal chat. We usually interview in Java or Ruby – but have made accommodations for other languages in the past, such as Clojure or Node.

We’re mostly looking for developers, but we’d also consider taking on a limited number of Business Analysts or Experience Designers at a graduate level if we find someone who is a great fit.
