Graduate Jobs at Pugh Computers (Ceredigion)

We currently have three open vacancies – at least two of which would be suitable for a recent or soon-to-be graduate. The Business IT Scheme Patricia was talking to us about would seem like a perfect fit for us here at Pugh, as the work we do here is heavily focused on business and technology. We specialise in providing software licensing, Microsoft Modern work solutions focused on Microsoft 365, Teams, Azure, security, etc., and hybrid meeting spaces, including interactive screens, cameras, microphones, speakers, etc. and are expanding our portfolio to incorporate Teams telephony and remote controlled blinds, lighting, etc. too., with a high focus on accessibility and sustainability.
Here are the links to all three jobs:

Dev Ops IY opportunity at BT Bristol

I received this from an alumni of the department from quite a few years ago:

1x IY placement opportunity at BT in Bristol within my team. Here is the link:

https://jobs.bt.com/job-invite/25270?external=true

The job title is “Full-Stack DevOps Engineer”. Quite a mouthful, but in reality it’s a full-stack development position with a hint of DevOps (at this level anyway). We encourage everyone to specialise in at least one area of “Ops” in addition to the main focus on “Dev” (we include testing in dev) – though for an IP this is only an option. This includes:

Application monitoring (Dynatrace)
Automation pipelines (we use Jenkins currently)
Containerization (we use Docker)
Service management (using ServiceNow)
Change management
User support
Infrastructure as Code

The placement would last 11 months and start September 2024. The student would need to be on track for a 2.1 or higher degree classification.

I have attached a document explaining the application process. I have also attached more info about the job.

0314_BT_Group_How to apply

We have created

Should the individual perform well, we would be able to fast-track them straight to the final interview for the BT grad scheme. So no need to go through the whole application process again – online assessment, video assessment and the assessment centre are skipped.

IY opportunities with TUI

Here is a message I received from a current Aber placement student at TUI:

They aren’t offering the web placement next year that I’m currently on, but they have a UX placement some computer science students might be interested in. I will also send over the links to other placements that may be useful for other departments too.

There are offering roles social media, marketing, merchandising, product planning, product development, trading and UX design.

STFC IY opportunities 2024-2025

The following email from Sam Jones, an Aber CS alumni who works (and also did his IY) with STFC:

We have the following roles for IY in my software group, I did the first one in this list when I was studying at Aberystwyth, as have other alum:

I heavily recommend STFC to students as many other students will be working there during their year and there are HR coordinators dedicated to ensuring that it works out, there are at least 30+ not listed roles that are not computing specific across the organization’s various facilities.

A quick caveat, as with most years the STFC ends it’s IY recruitment quite early because to my understanding that is when science placements usually stop recruiting. My understanding is that this year it is October 29th, 2023 for all of them.

ESP32 programmer summer job Enviro365 (Aberystwyth)

I have been contacted by Tony Powell (tony@enviro365.org) regarding their need for someone to do some Summer work on an IoT project. The have set an initial deadline for expressions of interest March 14th. They are based on the Aber Innovation Campus.

As discussed we are looking to undertake the following and have the need for a programmer to progress the sensors as follows :

Project Profile. (Aqua Eye)

An esp32 based microprocessor that communicates over LoRaWAN.
The Microprocessor has a range of sensors below feeding information through a dac converter.
The output is then forwarded via WAN to a front end web page where the data can be read

Our requirements

Looking for someone with experience of LoRaWAN and C++ that can take our outputs which we currently have running from the processor displayed on screen via Ardunio IDE and programme the device to output via lowran to the web as a readable format.

The sensor types and manufacture name are identified below

DF Robot – Analogue to Dissolved Oxygen (DO)Sensor
DF Robot – Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) Sensor
Optical Turbidity Sensor
PH Sensor
Phosphate Sensor
Nitrate sensor

What we have achieved to date

Providing a coms route from an esp32 outputting through SMS on alarm conditions. But for this project we would like to use a base station and LoRaWAN to reduce the costs of sim cards as part of the system.

Future Scope

To date we are finding it very difficult to get someone with experience and therefore are looking for a long term commitment once we have the initial program sorted to help develop the range of sensors as we expand.

Tony
