I am writing as the hiring manager to inform you of an employment opportunity at Sky within its Network Engineering division, which might possibly be suitable for you or for a contact you may know. Details are provided below:
Data Engineer
We have an opportunity for a Data Engineer within the Network Data Science & Software department, part of Sky’s Engineering division, which takes a data-driven approach towards meeting network planning and quality goals. Our networks are at the heart of delivering our entertainment services and as such using a data driven approach to ensure that all of our networks are always up and highly performant is our raison d’être.
What you’ll do
– Create and maintain an optimal data pipeline architecture focussed upon network data, including real-time and batch data sources.
– Assemble large, complex data sets that meet functional and non-functional business requirements.
– Identify, design, and implement internal process improvements: automating manual processes, optimising data delivery, re-designing infrastructure for greater scalability, etc.
– Build the infrastructure required for optimal extraction, transformation, and loading of data from a wide variety of data sources using SQL and Cloud ‘big data’ technologies.
– Keep our data separated and secure through multiple data centres and regions.
– Create data tools for data scientist team members that assist them in building and optimizing into an innovative industry leader.
What you’ll bring
– Graduate degree BSc in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering or similar. Strong communications skills.
– SQL knowledge and experience working with relational databases. Strong analytic skills related to working with structured and unstructured datasets.
– Proficient Python programmer.
– Ideally an awareness of network technologies and concepts or an insatiable desire to learn.
– Build processes supporting data transformation, data structures, metadata, dependency and workload management. A successful history of manipulating, processing and extracting value from large disconnected datasets.
– Experience with big data tools (e.g. Spark, Kafka), data pipeline and workflow management tools (e.g. Airflow) and GCP cloud services (e.g. Pub/Sub, Dataflow).

Hello,
I’m an Alumnus for the Aber Comp-Sci department (2012) and I am wondering if the following project might be of interest for any current or former students looking to gain some experience in using Ruby on Rails for web development.
With the current COVID-19 lockdown, esports in various forms have had a big surge in interest and participation. I myself am a sim-racer and have specialised (if you can call my poor results record a specialisation!) in GT3 driving. In short, I have joined a sim-racing organisation called Redline Motorsport (RLM) as one of the senior administration staff for my particular platform. We have been able to put on several big events with real-life SRO GT Championship drivers taking part and are currently working towards partnerships with several big names in the real world of GT racing as well as PC hardware suppliers.
Our current website is under continual development but we are looking to start a membership service to run alongside our ‘publicly available’ event list for ‘premium’ members to take part in for a subscription fee. However, all of our staff are volunteers at present and our work capacity is already full.
We are offering an opportunity for a Ruby on Rails developer to come in and implement this membership service on our website with a possibility of further project work later on. This will be paid (and not just in ‘exposure’, actual money!) depending on experience and would certainly be a great example of work to put on a CV.
I hope this is the right place to come with this but apologies if not, we can provide further information about the project if anyone wants to get in contact.
Kind regards,
Tom Roberts
