IY at Buhler Sortex in image processsing

IY at Buhler Sortex in image processsing (Greater London, deadline 17 March, £18,300) :

Buhler is a global market leader in the supply of flour production plants, pasta and chocolate production lines and animal feed manufacturing installations. They are currently seeking applications for an Image Processing placement. As a member of the Research team, the successful candidate will experience most aspects of research at Buhler Sortex. The main focus of the research is to investigate image processing and computer vision algorithms. A significant part of the role is writing Matlab code, a programming language widely used throughout academia and industry for rapid prototyping. The role includes undertaking experiments, learning new computer algorithms as well as experimenting with algorithms that learn.

The successful candidate will be working with 50 professional engineers to design the next generation of optical sorting machines. The size of the projects will vary, for some projects they will work independently, for others as part of a team.

Previous student projects:

Pioneering a new method for sorting food products. This involved implementing and evaluating the performance of several machine learning algorithms and selecting the most suitable solution for a specific application

Investigating the factors affecting how grains flow down a chute. This involved capturing image data and analysing this data to develop a suitable algorithm; then coding this algorithm in Matlab to product a software utility for use by other engineers.

Skills and requirements:

Applicants should have ability in computing, mathematics and engineering, with a keen interest in images and computing, including how computers can be used to extract information from images. Applicants do not need previous experience in machine vision or Matlab which can be learnt on the job.

To apply, please e-mail your CV and a covering letter outlining why you’ve chosen this placement to – hrukrecruitment@buhlersortex.com with ‘Image Processing Student Placement’ in the subject line.

Intergral GmbH IY positions (6 possible)

Intergral (http://www.intergral.com) are an SME near Stuttgart, Germany.  I visited the company a few months back and it is a fantastic place to work (it is a ‘spin off’ set up by two ex Hewlett Packard employees from the UK).  They work in English so German is not necessary.  There is an Aber student there this year.  You need to be very good technically and have a strong work ethic…  I copy a couple of comment the CEO passed on to me:

“A trend has been noticed in the series of interviews we have had thus far. A lot of the applicants have been very focused towards the design and building of websites. Whereas, Intergral is looking more for the design and creation of ‘web applications‘ rather than ‘web sites‘. It may be worth mentioning to students with an interest in the web position to ensure they have at least a good understanding of server-side languages such as PHP in addition to the front-end technologies listed in the job description. Additionally, they will definitely benefit greatly from becoming acquainted with cloud architecture and some of the frameworks/methodologies used to accomplish it.”

IY at Experian in Nottingham

Alex Stuart, an ACS graduate says:

A placeholder of sorts, but we’ve just received funding to take on an industrial year student next academic year (16-17 term) in our Enterprise System Management team at Experian. The ESM team focus on system monitoring, process automation, and IT service systems.

The role will require programming skills (I am still awaiting to hear which particular languages, as my experience with the department is coding in REXX, mainframe specific!). The potentially successful candidate would also have the chance to work with popular enterprise technologies like Splunk and CA service desk.

The infrastructure you would be supporting would be cutting edge, for one of the leading information services companies in the world.

The role would be based in Nottingham, and I will hopefully have more details for you all ASAP!

IYs in Munich, Germany for Caterva

Want an IY in Munich, Germany? We have been sent an email from Caterva:

I am writing on behalf of Caterva who have one-year placement opportunities for Bachelors & Masters Students in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or Electronic Engineering at Caterva Munich.

Caterva GmbH is a high-tech company creating new solutions for distributed energy storage, and is pioneering a new model of grid stabilisation. It is well-funded, run by experts in the field who have previous success in renewable energy start-ups, and is offering four 13 month internship opportunities at its headquarters in Munich starting July 2016. The placements reflect the spectrum of Caterva’s development activities: web & mobile interface development, C++ software development for communications, power electronics hardware design and test, and data acquisition and database development.

These are not placements that will suit all Students. Being a start-up, the environment is challenging. Initiative and independent working are key, and expectations will be high. Entrepreneurial Students, the ones with wild ideas who may already be saying “I am going start my own business” are the most likely to thrive!

Excellent salaries and working conditions are on offer.

There are students on current placements and they will overlap with the new Students to give them help to get started and then excellent handover training.
