Introduction

We are seeking a student with well-developed software skills to work on exciting investigations into future development tools

Advanced Product Development Intern

ARM doesn’t just develop high-performance designs that are used in most of the world’s most popular products. We also create the tools that are used to produce the software for those devices – compilers, debuggers, performance analysis tools and simulators. We’re looking for an intern to work in the Advanced Product Development team, on investigations into future development tools. This is exciting work combining analysis of market needs and technology trends with hands-on investigations and prototyping. There will be opportunities to work closely with experts from across ARM’s teams – software, hardware, graphics, marketing, Research & Development and even legal. You will work on one or more investigations with a senior ARM engineer acting as mentor and supervisor.

Are you a good fit for ARM?

In order to be considered you should be completing a degree course in Computer Science or other relevant subject. We’re looking for candidates with well-developed software skills. Successful candidates will ideally have engaged in a significant amount of software development beyond their set course work, for example through involvement in open-source projects. Essential skills and experience that we are looking for include: • Familiarity with C and/or C++ and scripting languages such as Python • Ability to think through complex, abstract problems • Ability to learn new skills • Interest and curiosity in new technology trends • A professional manner with good communication skills It’s a bonus if you also have: • Experience with embedded software and hardware • Experience with assembly-language programming • An understanding of microprocessor architecture and its effect on performance • Interest and/or prior experience with software optimization • Building and installing Linux • Familiarity with software licensing (e.g. GPL) and patent issues You will not be expected to have experience of the ARM architecture, though this would be an advantage

What’s in it For You?

As an intern at ARM, you will work on real projects that have real impact, while also building on key skills for your future studies and employment. We believe in developing talent for the future, and therefore aim to offer many of our interns a graduate position once they have finished their studies.

Working on interesting new projects is exciting but we also know how important it is to receive support. That’s why you will have regular 1 to 1 meetings with your line manager who will be able to offer ongoing support, feedback and development opportunities. You will be given a certain amount of flexibility and freedom in how you decide to complete your project tasks.

Not only will you be working in a friendly and relaxed working environment with a community of dedicated, innovative and highly talented professionals, you will also be offered a competitive salary. There will be opportunities for you to get involved in social events with other interns and the wider company.

IY – Software Developer – Blurrt

Miles Cook who is an Aber Grad has contacted me – he works for a company called Blurrt http://www.blurrt.co.uk/, based in Newport, South Wales – they want to take on an IY student for the first time, this is what he says:-

“As an Aber Computer Science graduate (2004) I feel I benefited greatly from the year in employment scheme, and I’m interested to see what kind of skilled and enthusiastic students we can bring in. A fixed placement with us could also lead to an offer of employment once the student has concluded their studies, as our software development team grows.

We are a Twitter analytics company with 4 full time staff. Our flagship product “blurrt” performs linguistic based sentiment analysis of tweets, which we can report out on per keyword / campaign, and offer clients dashboard reporting and analysis tools. So far our main source of work in terms of commissioned bespoke reports and subscriptions to our online tool, are broadcasters for shows that have high engagement through Twitter (such as Made in Chelsea, Sherlock). We are also in the digital agency market, and are exploring other avenues such as Politics, for example, tracking opinion on the Scottish referendum.

I head up the development of our online web tool, partially assisted by our in house graphics designer. We require a developer with a keen interest in web development, new technologies and social media. Their role will be to assist in the continual development of our product and as a secondary role, to assist with the company website.
Salary is £16k
Please email your CV and cover letter to miles@blurrt.co.uk .
Closing date is 3rd FebruaryAgain, this one is only being advertised to Aber students.  You are in demand this year!  🙂
