Dear Final Year Students / Graduates,
British Council Language Assistants Opportunity, CHINA: Applications now open!
The British Council is currently recruiting 100 graduates to become English Language Assistants in China. We’re looking for open minded, mature and adaptable individuals from across the UK. You need to have at least a 2nd class degree (from any subject) by summer 2013 to apply but do not need any previous teaching experience or a knowledge of Mandarin to participate in the programme.
You will live and teach in China for approximately ten months where you will receive a local salary of 3-4500 RMB per month, free accommodation, plus your return flights reimbursed. The programme begins with a two week TEFL induction course in Beijing in August 2013 and teaching follows the Chinese school year from Sept 2012 to June 2013. You will gain valuable skills and life experience – impressing future employers upon your return. Previous English Language Assistants have gone on to pursue successful careers in journalism, teaching, business, charity work, and international relations.
This is a fantastic opportunity to get to know the ‘real’ China whilst giving something back to the community.
Find out more about the programme and how to apply here: http://www.britishcouncil.org/languageassistants-china.htm.
Deadline for applications is 3rd December 2012. Apply early as you will need to send us some additional documents to complete your application. (Details on the website)

Intel are advertising for industrial placements. We have had a student at the Swindon location before, and it seems to be a good placement, especially if you are looking to work for a big company.

Daniel Cucos, one of the department’s graduates, is coming to the University on Friday 2nd November to talk about careers with IBM. Daniel graduated in 2011 and he is currently an IT Junior Consultant at IBM in the UK.
He is running a general session pitched at all departments from 12noon until 1.30pm. You can find out details at the Careers site.
At 2pm, Daniel will take a session aimed directly at Computer Science students. He will be talking about his experience of working for IBM, tips on applications and also talking about the current Graduate opportunities and Industrial Placements. This is in 0.33 in the new IBERS building. Come along to learn about specific opportunities available for students with a computing background.
IBM has launched its annual Mainframe contest. It has already started and it will continue to run until 31st December 2012.
The prizes this year include:
The Mainframe challenge is a great opportunity for undergraduates to learn some skills related to IBM’s zOS operating system. Skills which are sought after in industry and hard to come by, without this kind of opportunity.
So far, there are 200 students signed up and the majority of them are from Manchester University. It would be a good show if we could get Aber Comp Sci in the top 3 and win those prizes.
Welcome to Your Future, a new site by CompSci to highlight relevant careers information that we hope will help you to think about what you want to do next and how to go about getting on the right track.
This information is intended for Aber CompSci students. It is probably most relevant to students planning an Industrial Year, 3rd years, final year MEng students and MSc students, but it is open to everyone.
This is an experiment and we welcome your input on how to make this a useful resource that helps you to move on to your next great challenge.
