Graduate and Industrial Year Placements – RENISHAW

Renishaw Graduate and Industrial Placements adverts

Adrian Shaw says: “Renishaw are a very good company to work for, and at the cutting edge of technology with their own research labs. I’ve visited an IY student there recently, and in the past I’ve worked on a collaborative project with them. They really seem to look after their employees. And their rural location in South Gloucestershire is a lovely place to work and live.”

Closing date is 31st December.

Working at ThoughtWorks

ThoughtWorks Logo

ThoughtWorks is a software company that began in 1993 and has offices around the globe. Its clients include guardian.co.uk, Siemens, NSPCC, E4 and thetrainline.com, to name a few. They are looking for talented graduates to join their company. They have recruited several Aber graduates and are keen to talk to come back to look for more.

The session will begin at 6.15pm on Thursday 15th November. There will be a presentation about careers at ThoughtWorks and an opportunity to learn about agile team planning for projects – using Lego as a way to explore the ideas.

The session will finish by 8:15pm. There will be plenty of time for an informal chat with the Aber graduates who now work at ThoughtWorks.

This session is for anyone who enjoys writing software. This certainly includes students in Computer Science, but anyone from any discipline who is passionate about software can apply to ThoughtWorks. Come along to see why this could be you.

We are asking for people to book for this session. If you plan to come along, please use the booking form on the Careers site.

Also, there will be some additional technical oriented sessions running on Friday 16th. You are welcome to come along to those too. For details about those sessions, please contact Neil Taylor nst@aber.ac.uk.

IBM Careers Visit

Daniel Cucos, one of the department’s graduates, is coming to the University on Friday 2nd November to talk about careers with IBM. Daniel graduated in 2011 and he is currently an IT Junior Consultant at IBM in the UK.

IBM UK Mainframe Challenge

IBM UK Mainframe Challenge Poster
IBM has launched its annual Mainframe contest. It has already started and it will continue to run until 31st December 2012.

The prizes this year include:

  • A hoodie to the first 250 students to complete Part 1.
  • £50 Amazon Gift Card for the first 25 to correctly complete Part 2.
  • Samsung Galaxy Tab and a visit to Hursley Labs for the top 3 students completing Part 3.

The Mainframe challenge is a great opportunity for undergraduates to learn some skills related to IBM’s zOS operating system. Skills which are sought after in industry and hard to come by, without this kind of opportunity.

So far, there are 200 students signed up and the majority of them are from Manchester University. It would be a good show if we could get Aber Comp Sci in the top 3 and win those prizes.
